About Refugee Week
Refugee Week 2010 will take place from 14 - 20 June. The purpose of the Week is to deliver positive educational messages that counter fear, ignorance and negative stereotypes of refugees, through a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events. These events serve to celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and promote understanding about the reasons why people seek sanctuary.
As Refugee Week Regional Coordinator for the South East, Future Creative is the main point of contact for Refugee Week related queries in the particular region. The role is vital to the development of Refugee Week’s work in England. We are assisting community groups with queries about Refugee Week in the SE, encouraging partnership working, providing the Refugee Week team with information about local events for the Refugee Week website, and where possible organising regional Refugee Week meetings.
Refugee Week is a multi-agency project. Main partner agencies currently include: Amnesty International UK, British Red Cross, Oxfam, Refugee Action, Refugee Council, Scottish Refugee Council, the Home Office, Children’s Society, Student Action for Refugees, City of Sanctuary and the Welsh Refugee Council. The Refugee Week central team is based within the Refugee Council’s Office in Brixton.
Future Creative’s role as Refugee Week Co-ordinator is part of our wider Engage programme which aims to work throughout the community and with hard to reach and minority groups.
